The New Adventures of Superman

Superman wouldn't succeed in returning to television screens until 1966, nine years after the final season of Adventures of Superman.  The new series, The New Adventures of Superman, was Filmation Studios first attempt at an animated series.  This show went on to record the highest ratings ever for any Saturday morning series.  The fledgling studio produced 44 animated episodes and their success opened the flood-gates for many other comic book Superheroes to appear in cartoons.

The stories in the series featured many classic Superman elements - including battles with boyhood friend turned arch enemy, Lex Luther; and saving beautiful reporter, Lois Lane, and young photographer, Jimmy Olsen in the process.  Many other classic villains such as Brainiac put in their first television appearances.

The series also featured a young Clark Kent as Superboy with his Krypton-born pet, Krypto the Superdog.  These segments have Superboy dealing with all kinds of threats to civilization, from alien invaders to natural disasters as well as facing his own teenage problems.

DC editor Mort Weisinger, who had been story editor on the George Reeves Adventures of Superman television series and was currently the editor of the Superman family of comic-books, served as Story Editor on this all-new television cartoon series.  Several other of Superman's original writers, like Leo Dorfman, Bob Haney, and George Kashdam, also lent their talents by scripting many of the episodes.

Bud Collyer, who had portrayed Superman in both the original radio series and in the Fleisher cartoons of the 1940s, returned for the dual role of Superman and Clark Kent.  Joan Alexander also returned from the radio series to voice Lois Lane, while Jason Beck was again the narrator.  Jack Grimes (probably best known as Speed Racer's Sparky) joined the cast in the role of Jimmy Olsen.
