After the battle, Superman finds Pete Ross’s cell empty.

He remembers a vicious fight he waged with Brainiac, who had captured Lois, Perry, Jimmy, and Lana. But the blood isn’t Brainiac’s; whose is it? The Justice League arrives to take Superman into custody.
Action 829	Simone	Byrne	Nelson	“Sacrifice” Part II. Superman tries to explain what happened to the Justice League, describing how Darkseid had taken him to Apokolips and forced him to fight. The League shows him the truth—that he had beaten Batman nearly to death. Congressman Shepherd orders an attack on Lois Lane.

Lex Luthor has been cleared of more than 120 criminal charges, but has lost the respect of most of the citizens of Metropols. A physicist working with kryptonite inadvertently absorbs it into himself and goes on a rampage, only to be stopped by Supergirl. Luthor threatens Kent and warns him not to run any more stories about “the fall of Luthor.”
Action 837	Johns, Busiek	Woods	Woods	“Up Up and Away” Part II. Luthor explains his plan to use stolen Kryptonian technology and kryptonite to the Toyman, and recruits Metallo. Clark Kent investigates a series of thefts of heavy technology and finds a group of thugs hoping to get into Intergang. Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Hawkgirl arrive to help. Jordan gives Clark a power ring.
Superman 651	Busiek, Johns	Woods	Woods	“Up Up and Away” Part III. Clark turns down Hal Jordan’s offer of a power ring. The Prankster attacks Metropolis, and Green Lantern and Hawkgirl respond; but the attack was a diversion so the Flea Circus could break the Kryptonite Man out of Stryker’s and bring him to Luthor, who has amassed all the kryptonite in the world—including Metallo’s.
Action 838	Johns, Busiek	Guedes	Guedes	“Up Up and Away” Part IV. Clark and Jimmy bust an Intergang arms deal. Luthor channels the kryptonite radiation through the Kryptonite Man, aiming it towards the center of the Earth. Clark is attacked by two supervillains sent by Intergang. He discovers that his powers are coming back.
Superman 652	Busiek, Johns	Woods	Woods	“Up Up and Away” Part V. Superman’s powers have returned. The Man of Steel fights the Puzzler, Livewire, the Silver Banshee, Riot, Hellgrammite, and Bloodsport, who have all been sent by Intergang to kill Clark Kent. Luthor accelerates his plan to take control of a Kryptonian warship buried near the center of the Earth.
