Welcome to the NEW HOME of The Unofficial Golden-Age Superman Site, passed to us by Patrick M. Gerard in 2002.  One of the site's many old homes may still be found here.

Superman leapt out into the world in 1938 and quickly became one of America's enduring icons, promoting the war effort in the second World War and acting as a role model to an entire generation. The brainchild of writer Jerry Siegel and cartoonist Joe Shuster, he seemed to be the very embodiment of American idealism and determination. His fun-filled comic magazines Action Comics and Superman were published by National Comics, which later became known as Detective Comics, Inc. (Or DC for short.)

Superman was gradually revamped in the late 1940s and early 1950s until he became a character very different from his original incarnation.

Later, it would be revealed that the original incarnation of Superman still existed intact in an alternate universe. This Superman was older and wiser, serving as mentor to a younger generation of heroes. He was now married to rival reporter Lois Lane. Mild-mannered Clark Kent had become a newspaper editor! The original Superman had quietly evolved off-camera while a generation of readers had thrilled to the daring adventures of a very different Superman, one who better reflected the idealism and optimism of the 1950s and 60s.

In 1985, following a universe-shattering crisis, the first Superman quietly retired to an alternate reality where he lives with his wife. The original Superman's appearances have been highly infrequent since his retirement although recent developments offer the potential to restore him as an active character in the DC Comics Universe.

Whatever his eventual fate, these pages are dedicated to the life of the original Superman and to the vision of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, his creators.
